It started out with a simple ask; could I help in an area that I have some knowledge (i.e. to be treasurer)? Since then I have learned so much about a topic of which I had very little knowledge; that of living with a physical disability. I am amazed by the stories of individuals, caregivers and others involved and affected. I’ve also learned what an impact we can have as a community if we choose to care, and choose to do something about it. I’m inspired to be part of a team dedicated to trying to make a difference in this part of our community, one action at a time.

Leading by example is a mantra I have lived by for decades. I believe that working toward making a difference is vital, and that building a better world is something we should all strive for.
I am proud to be a part of the Habilitas Foundation, an organization staffed and led by an inspired, unentitled and unselfish team that works daily to impact the lives of those we serve. This is why I continue to be part of this very special community.

For many years Habilitas Foundation has helped people of all ages with physical disabilities and their families receive the best rehabilitation services and real-life experiences, by supporting programs with our established partners across the spectrum of care. Additionally, the foundation helps identify, and fund new initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for the population it works with. I am excited to see what opportunities present themselves next, particularly in service of young adults.

My first experience with the MAB/Mackay (now Lethbridge-Layton-Mackay Rehabilitation Centre) was as a teenager when there was also a residence at the MAB. A friend lived onsite and when we visited, we could see firsthand the care and compassion that was provided to residents, as well as the abundance of services that were available. Several years later I had the opportunity to join the Investment Committee and later the board. I was excited to help usher in the transition from MAB-Mackay Foundation to what is now the Habilitas Foundation, and to be a part of its expansion into supporting a wider array of organizations and areas of need.

I have a wonderful and personal connection to the Habilitas Foundation through its long term support of the Layton-Lethbridge-Mackay Rehabilitation Centre. The often unsung work done by the staff at LLMRC, and other foundation partners to support people living with vision, motor, speech and other impairments is lifegiving! It offers opportunities to re-engage with their loved ones and the world in ways we often take for granted. I am excited to be able serve as a board member, alongside the fantastic team at Habilitas Foundation to work to broaden our impact on populations that need caring and measured support.

Abigail Greenidge
I think about a world in which every person is able to engage in any activity or sport, and able to choose not to participate rather than be excluded from the start because of accessibility issues. I am inspired by those who are fighting for positive change and motivated by the daily obstacles some individuals face. There is still work to be done, and I believe we can get there. I feel honored to be on the Board of Habilitas Foundation and am excited to help support the organization’s initiatives.

Michael Prupas
It’s an honour for me to serve on the Board of the Habilitas Foundation, and to support its long standing commitment to the members of our community who deal with so many challenges. The kindness of spirit and generosity of the many dedicated staff and volunteers who work with and for the foundation are an inspiration, and I look forward to making my contribution toward furthering their shared goals.
