With your support, we can create a world where silence is no longer deafening.At first, Virginia had difficulty following conversations with her friends.
As her hearing deteriorated, she grew anxious about everyday things, like talking on the phone or going to the movies. Her hearing aids were irritating and unreliable. She began to feel like a nuisance to others, always asking them to repeat themselves. She felt increasingly detached from society, as if she was living in a bubble.
Virginia’s experience is typical of people facing hearing loss.
Enjoyment of life, leisure and social activities are reduced, while interpersonal relationships may be strained. For a child born Deaf or with a hearing impairment, challenges with language development can affect their ability to understand their world and their place in it.
“Now, I can hear the birds tweeting, leaves crunching under my feet, and I can even speak to my grandchildren and friends on the phone. The cochlear implant was an absolute gift. Before it, I couldn’t follow the conversations of my friends and family, which left me frustrated and feeling like a third wheel. Now, my life is no longer insular. I can’t thank the MAB-Mackay Centre enough for introducing me to the technology, for working with me after the surgery on adjusting to sound, and for changing my life.“

HABILITAS supports a range of services for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
This includes intensive cochlear implant rehabilitation, American Sign Language (ASL) training, outfitting of assistive listening devices, speech therapy, auditory training and speech production, and phonological awareness.
