La premi\u00e8re fois qu\u2019on m\u2019a sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019obtenir un implant cochl\u00e9aire, ma r\u00e9action a \u00e9t\u00e9 instinctivement n\u00e9gative : je ne ferais jamais cela! Ma femme Rhona me sugg\u00e9rait continuellement de le faire depuis des ann\u00e9es, mais je refusais obstin\u00e9ment. Je n\u2019allais pas subir d\u2019intervention chirurgicale pour que l\u2019on pose un dispositif sp\u00e9cial sur mon cr\u00e2ne, jamais de la vie!<\/p>\n

M\u00eame si je portais des proth\u00e8ses auditives depuis une trentaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es, le r\u00e9sultat \u00e9tait peu convaincant. Ainsi, mon ou\u00efe se d\u00e9t\u00e9riorait lentement, mais j\u2019ignorais tout ce que je ratais de la vie.<\/p>\n

Il y a quelques ann\u00e9es, j\u2019ai re\u00e7u une nouvelle formidable : nous deviendrions grands-parents pour la premi\u00e8re fois. Cela m\u2019a tellement touch\u00e9 que je me suis rendu compte que je ne souhaitais pas rater les moments pr\u00e9cieux qui s\u2019en venaient.<\/p>\n

J\u2019ai communiqu\u00e9 avec le MAB-Mackay, \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 qu\u2019ils devaient \u00eatre ma liaison afin de mettre le processus en branle. La premi\u00e8re chose qu\u2019ils ont faite, c\u2019est de me faire passer un test auditif, ce que j\u2019ai \u00e9chou\u00e9 lamentablement. J\u2019ai insist\u00e9 sur le fait que personne ne pourrait entendre les bruits du test. J\u2019ai donc demand\u00e9 \u00e0 Rhona de subir le m\u00eame test et bien s\u00fbr, il a d\u00e9montr\u00e9 qu\u2019elle entend parfaitement. Je me suis vite rendu compte \u00e0 quel point ma perte auditive \u00e9tait s\u00e9rieuse.<\/p>\n

Nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 mis en contact avec un merveilleux travailleur social qui a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 att\u00e9nuer mes inqui\u00e9tudes. Nous avons travaill\u00e9 ensemble afin de m\u2019aider \u00e0 comprendre les dynamiques de l\u2019op\u00e9ration et \u00e0 me pr\u00e9parer de la meilleure fa\u00e7on possible. Il a organis\u00e9 un rendez-vous avec un receveur r\u00e9cent d\u2019un implant, ce qui a dissip\u00e9 mes peurs et m\u2019a convaincu qu\u2019il s\u2019agissait de la meilleure solution pour moi. J\u2019ai finalement admis que j\u2019\u00e9tais sourd et j\u2019ai constat\u00e9 que je n\u2019avais rien \u00e0 perdre et tout \u00e0 gagner. J\u2019\u00e9tais empli d\u2019espoir alors que le MAB-Mackay a soumis ma demande pour l\u2019intervention.<\/p>\n

Dans notre province, elle est r\u00e9alis\u00e9e \u00e0 Qu\u00e9bec. Au pr\u00e9alable, j\u2019ai rencontr\u00e9 mon chirurgien et il m\u2019a fait passer des tests auditifs. Ils ont d\u00e9termin\u00e9 que j\u2019\u00e9tais le candidat id\u00e9al pour la proc\u00e9dure, puisque je portais une proth\u00e8se auditive depuis toutes ces ann\u00e9es. Cela avait permis de maintenir active la partie de mon cerveau qui traite les sons, m\u00eame si je n\u2019entendais que tr\u00e8s peu.<\/p>\n

Ma vie a compl\u00e8tement chang\u00e9. Les gens merveilleux qui ont travaill\u00e9 avec moi au MAB-Mackay sont mes superh\u00e9ros. Le soutien est essentiel dans ce type d\u2019exp\u00e9rience bouleversante. Sans leur aide au cours de ces deux derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, mon parcours aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 impossible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

L\u2019op\u00e9ration a \u00e9t\u00e9 un vif succ\u00e8s. Je n\u2019ai pas souffert et apr\u00e8s une semaine, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 en mesure de conduire et de retourner au travail. Nous sommes retourn\u00e9s \u00e0 Qu\u00e9bec pour activer le processeur (que je dois porter au-dessus de mon oreille) ainsi que l\u2019implant. D\u00e8s qu\u2019ils l\u2019ont activ\u00e9 et que j\u2019ai entendu ma voix pour la premi\u00e8re fois, je me suis mis \u00e0 pleurer. Je ne m\u2019\u00e9tais jamais rendu compte \u00e0 quel point je ne connaissais pas ma propre voix!<\/p>\n

Le processus n\u2019\u00e9tait toutefois pas termin\u00e9. J\u2019ai d\u00fb passer de nombreuses semaines avec la merveilleuse \u00e9quipe du MABMackay \u00e0 ajuster le processeur pour peaufiner les r\u00e9sultats et pour entra\u00eener mon cerveau \u00e0 mieux comprendre les sons que j\u2019entendais.<\/p>\n

Je pouvais maintenant entendre! Il s\u2019agissait d\u2019une merveilleuse sensation, mais j\u2019ai pens\u00e9 \u00e0 tout ce que j\u2019avais manqu\u00e9 durant toutes ces ann\u00e9es. Ils m\u2019ont sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 de ne pas regarder en arri\u00e8re, mais plut\u00f4t de me tourner vers l\u2019avenir. Maintenant que je sais ce qu\u2019est d\u2019entendre, ils m\u2019ont conseill\u00e9 de me faire poser un implant dans l\u2019autre oreille. Cette fois, il n\u2019a pas fallu longtemps pour me convaincre. Ma deuxi\u00e8me intervention chirurgicale a eu lieu le printemps dernier et j\u2019ai pass\u00e9 les cinq semaines suivantes, presque chaque jour, au Centre MAB-Mackay afin de suivre de la th\u00e9rapie.<\/p>\n

Je suis aujourd\u2019hui une nouvelle personne. Je peux \u00e9couter la radio dans l\u2019auto et entendre la musique. Je peux aller au cin\u00e9ma et \u00e9couter la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision sans assistance. Lorsque je vais jouer au golf ou lorsque je vais souper avec mes amis, je peux interagir et m\u2019amuser avec eux. Ce qui est le plus important, c\u2019est que je peux \u00e9couter mes petits-enfants parler.<\/p>\n

Un implant cochl\u00e9aire consiste en un petit dispositif \u00e9lectronique qui est chirurgicalement implant\u00e9 dans l\u2019oreille interne. Contrairement aux proth\u00e8ses auditives traditionnelles, qui amplifient le son, un implant cochl\u00e9aire transforme les sons en \u00e9nergie \u00e9lectrique qui stimule le nerf auditif ou de l\u2019ou\u00efe en contournant les parties endommag\u00e9es de l\u2019oreille interne.<\/p>\n

Le MAB-Mackay a le mandat suprar\u00e9gional d\u2019offrir la programmation connexe aux implants cochl\u00e9aires ainsi que du soutien technique \u00e0 la client\u00e8le anglophone du Qu\u00e9bec.
