On s\u2019en rappelle comme si c\u2019\u00e9tait d\u2019hier. Nous \u00e9tions assis devant un neurochirurgien alors qu\u2019il nous expliquait que notre fils nouveau-n\u00e9 \u00e9tait atteint d\u2019une condition appel\u00e9e hydroc\u00e9phalie, un mot dont nous n\u2019avions jamais entendu parler auparavant. Notre fils Mathieu (que nous appelons affectueusement Matty) avait du liquide spinal c\u00e9r\u00e9bral qui s\u2019accumulait dans son cerveau.<\/p>\n

Matty a subi une chirurgie pour att\u00e9nuer la pression et pr\u00e9lever du liquide dans son cerveau \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de neuf mois seulement. M\u00eame si le probl\u00e8me s\u2019att\u00e9nuerait graduellement, les dommages \u00e9taient faits. L\u2019un des c\u00f4t\u00e9s du corps de Matty resterait paralys\u00e9 et il aurait une vision partielle.<\/p>\n

Les mois suivants sont plut\u00f4t vagues \u00e0 notre esprit : nous faisions le deuil des r\u00eaves que nous ch\u00e9rissions pour notre gar\u00e7on, sans savoir s\u2019il marcherait ou s\u2019il parlerait un jour, ni pourquoi cela s\u2019est produit.<\/p>\n

Lorsque nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 accept\u00e9s au MAB-Mackay pour la physioth\u00e9rapie, nous ne savions pas \u00e0 quoi nous attendre ni comment cela changerait nos vies et l\u2019avenir de notre fils.<\/p>\n

Alison a \u00e9t\u00e9 la premi\u00e8re th\u00e9rapeute \u00e0 travailler avec Matty. Elle a cibl\u00e9 les mouvements de base afin de l\u2019aider \u00e0 renforcer son c\u00f4t\u00e9 faible. Avec l\u2019aide de jouets et de th\u00e9rapie active, elle l\u2019a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 se d\u00e9passer au-del\u00e0 de nos attentes. Alison \u00e9tait si rassurante, et ses nombreuses ann\u00e9es d\u2019exp\u00e9rience l\u2019ont aid\u00e9 \u00e0 nous guider dans ce nouveau monde o\u00f9 nous \u00e9levions un enfant avec des besoins sp\u00e9ciaux.<\/p>\n

Au cours des deux ann\u00e9es et demie suivantes, nous avons ajout\u00e9 de l\u2019ergoth\u00e9rapie, de l\u2019orthophonie et de la th\u00e9rapie aquatique \u00e0 nos visites bihebdomadaires au MAB-Mackay. Notre \u00e9quipe de th\u00e9rapeutes avait un plan d\u00e9fini : que Matty soit en mesure de parler et de marcher, et ce, tr\u00e8s bien!<\/p>\n

En raison de donateurs comme vous, Matty a \u00e9t\u00e9 en mesure d\u2019atteindre des objectifs que les m\u00e9decins croyaient impossibles.<\/p>\n

Chaque \u00e9tape importante dans la vie de Matty s\u2019est amorc\u00e9e au MAB-Mackay, depuis ses premiers pas et ses premi\u00e8res paroles, en passant par l\u2019apprentissage de la natation et de la bicyclette. Tout cela a commenc\u00e9 par de la th\u00e9rapie. Pour chaque d\u00e9fi auquel nous nous sommes mesur\u00e9s, nous avons \u00e9labor\u00e9 notre plan th\u00e9rapeutique, \u00e9tabli nos objectifs et travaill\u00e9 avec notre \u00e9quipe pour les atteindre.<\/p>\n

Matty est maintenant \u00e2g\u00e9 de neuf ans et il fr\u00e9quente l\u2019\u00e9cole primaire de notre quartier en quatri\u00e8me ann\u00e9e. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 tout le soutien que nous avons obtenu du MAB-Mackay, Matty dispose maintenant de l\u2019environnement d\u2019apprentissage id\u00e9al \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole de notre quartier. Cela lui permet de se d\u00e9passer et \u00e0 ses professeurs de tirer le meilleur de lui.<\/p>\n

Nous \u00e9tions tous les deux abasourdis. Nous avons d\u00fb demander au m\u00e9decin de r\u00e9p\u00e9ter ce qu\u2019il avait dit \u00e0 de nombreuses fois parce que nous ne comprenions tout simplement pas les mots qui sortaient de sa bouche. Nous n\u2019avions pas pr\u00e9vu que la naissance de notre fils se d\u00e9roulerait ainsi. Il ne s\u2019agissait pas des r\u00eaves que nous ch\u00e9rissions pour lui.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

L\u2019an dernier, le MAB-Mackay a accord\u00e9 \u00e0 Matty la chance de vivre l\u2019une des meilleures exp\u00e9riences de sa vie. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9 \u00e0 repr\u00e9senter le Centre lors du D\u00e9fi Sportif, une comp\u00e9tition sportive pour enfants ayant une d\u00e9ficience. Il a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 la course de 50 m \u00e0 pied et \u00e0 la course de 50 m en tricycle, et pour la premi\u00e8re fois de sa vie, il \u00e9tait en t\u00eate du lot.<\/p>\n

Regarder notre fils donner le meilleur de lui-m\u00eame a constitu\u00e9 un sentiment incroyable. De nombreuses longues ann\u00e9es de th\u00e9rapie, d\u2019innombrables larmes et beaucoup d\u2019incertitude filaient vers la ligne d\u2019arriv\u00e9e avec la concentration et la d\u00e9termination de l\u2019athl\u00e8te le plus chevronn\u00e9. Avec des larmes de fiert\u00e9 et de joie s\u2019\u00e9coulant sur mon visage, j\u2019ai encourag\u00e9 Matty qui a gagn\u00e9 une m\u00e9daille de bronze et une m\u00e9daille d\u2019or. Tout cela d\u2019un enfant qui ne devait m\u00eame jamais marcher!<\/p>\n

M\u00eame si Matty a fait beaucoup de chemin, nous avons tant de travail \u00e0 faire pour le pr\u00e9parer pour la vraie vie. Sera-t-il en mesure d\u2019accomplir tant de t\u00e2ches de la vie quotidienne que nous tenons pour acquises, comme mettre de la p\u00e2te dentifrice sur une brosse \u00e0 dents, ou se rendre \u00e0 la toilette seul? Comment apprendra-t-il \u00e0 se pr\u00e9parer de la nourriture? \u00c0 emprunter le transport en commun? O\u00f9 comment se fera le transfert vers l\u2019\u00e9cole secondaire en m\u00eame temps que ses amis? Il s\u2019agit de nos prochains d\u00e9fis afin que Matty puisse \u00eatre le plus autosuffisant possible dans ce monde en \u00e9volution constante.<\/p>\n
