Fifteen summers ago, I spent my first amazing stay at Camp Massawippi. I’ve come back every year since, and I can’t wait to return again this summer.
I was only seven years old when I discovered this unique camp. I don’t remember much, but my mother tells me that the experience gave me confidence and the freedom to express myself, and to feel comfortable with others that have similar needs as me.
What’s so special about Camp Massawippi is that everything is set up to support the needs of campers like me. As I was born with an unknown genetic condition that limits movement in my legs, feet, and shoulders, I require assistance in many everyday tasks. The counselors help me get ready for the day in the mornings, with personal hygiene needs, and during mealtime. They also help in transferring me from my wheelchair to my walker or my bed, and onto the beach or into the lake.
My very best memories from camp are water-skiing and swimming in the lake, because I love being free in the water. I’ll never forget the first time I tried the disabled waterski program. It was one of the best feelings in my life – the feeling of freedom and fun was absolutely awesome! My other favourite activities at camp are tie-dye making, singing with my friends at the bonfires, the dance parties, and of course, swimming.
My time at Camp Massawippi also means a lot to my family as well. They’re grateful that I’m in a safe, accepting environment where I’m having fun. They work so hard to take care of me, so I’m happy they have a bit of a break too.
I know that running a place like Camp Massawippi takes a lot of special people and a great deal of organization.
“But it’s so important to me and the other campers, because we get to enjoy a magical summer experience in an accessible, safe, and caring surrounding among nature, which many able- bodied children and young adults take for granted.”

Thank you for supporting Camp Massawippi and for giving me so many amazing experiences and memories. I’m counting down the days until my parents drop me off at Camp and I’m grateful to kind people like you for giving me this incredible opportunity.
Wishing you a great summer.
